What does it take to win the country’s largest Carcase Competitions?

Over the course of the last few weeks Gyranda genetics have taken out two major industry awards; The RNA Paddock to Palate (weight gain) and the most successful exhibitor at the Callide Dawson carcase competition.
This year’s Paddock to Palate best weight gain continues a long tradition of success in the country’s largest carcase comp. It marks the fourth time we have won a class (plus numerous other placings) in the last ten years. That consistency gives me the confidence that Santa Gertrudis, and Gyranda genetics in particular, will deliver you un-paralleled growth in the commercial production environment.
The recent Callide Dawson carcase success was a little more of a surprise. Our local competition, with proceeds flowing to our local show society, was established in the late 1980’s and Burnett Joyce was a key part of its inception. Competition is fierce and at over 600 entries, it has evolved into one of the largest competitions in the country. Gyranda cattle normally win a class or two (especially weight gain) but this year won steers, heifers, weight gain and carcase to deliver ‘Most Successful Exhibitor’ for the first time. I suspect that success will be hard to replicate, but I’ll take it when we can!! Noticeable for me is the consistency of increased marbling (and hence MSA score) without diminishing EMA or carcase weight in Gyranda cattle. These traits have certainly been selected for over the last eight to ten years in our genetics program, and perhaps we are seeing the payback and its very real commercial relevance.
